The 'Flashes Festival of Nature' is a FREE family-friendly fun event, running from 11am-3pm.
This event celebrates the recent designation of the new "Flashes of Wigan and Leigh" National Nature Reserve covering 738 hectares of wetlands which is managed by Wigan Council, Lancashire Wildlife Trust and Forestry England.
There'll be a host of nature-themed activities plus the official opening of the new adventure playground on site!

We are joining up with the Bollin Valley Partnership to tackle invasive Himalayan Balsam and undertake any meadow management tasks required on the day at Rossmill Woodland.

This work party will run from 9:30am until approx. 3:00pm, but you are welcome to join in for as little or as long as you want. Work will involve hand pulling of balsam plants and potentially "bashing" using hand tools to prevent it from going to seed and spreading further. Full training will be provided.
The session is outdoors so make sure you have waterproofs and sun protection as needed. Bring plenty of food and water to keep you going. Bring your own work gloves if you have them (we will have a small number available to borrow if you don't have your own). Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear, wellies or good boots are best. Long trousers and long sleeves are advised to protect your arms and legs, as balsam often grows alongside nettles and brambles!

We will be working along the banks of Birkin Brook, near Ashley Road, Ashley WA14 3QQ. Access is via a farm track. Enter the track adjacent to Ashley Bridge signposted to Birtles Farm. Parking is adjacent to the cattle grid 200m from roadway – park on right before grid, being careful not to block gate used by horse riders.

Join us for a guided walk along the River Irk from Manchester Victoria Station to Queen's Park, Manchester (5 mins walk from Queen's Road Metrolink Stop). 10am to 1pm.
We will discuss the environment and heritage of the River Irk in the heart of urban Manchester.

To mark the 2nd anniversary of our Plastic Free Mersey programme, we are holding a Plastic Litter Blitz along the River Irk in north Manchester on Wednesday 5 July from 10am to 1pm.
We will be doing a litter pick along the River Irk and sorting the litter we find using our Plastic Free Mersey litter survey method to categorise the litter collected: plastic, glass, paper, metal, etc.
We will meet at 10am at Queen's Park, Manchester by the road entrance to the park, just off Queen's Road/Park View. Nearest postcode is M9 5FF. 5 minutes walk from Queen's Road Metrolink stop.
All equipment provided. Please wear strong shoes/boots and long trousers are highly recommended due to nettles and brambles along parts of the route. Please wear clothing suitable for the weather conditions.

Join us at The Carrs park in Wilmslow to learn new practical conservation skills and help us restore an area of eroded riverbank!
We will be working in partnership with the Bollin Valley Partnership Rangers at The Carrs Park, Wilmslow to reinforce and repair the banks of the River Bollin. Learn new skills and enjoy some time outdoors at a wonderful local park.
This work party will run from 10am-3pm and we will be meeting in the Twinnies Bridge car park off Styal Road.
For this working party you will need wellies (preferrable steel toe caps, let us know on the order form if you would like to borrow some) or waders. Bring lunch and your own work gloves if you have them, and please wear suitable outdoor clothing. Long trousers and sleeves are recommended!

Mersey Rivers Trust is pleased to be supporting the work by British Canoeing, the Angling Trust and Canal & Rivers Trust to remove the Floating Pennywort invasive plant species from the River Weaver to protect fish, other wildlife and recreation on this waterway.

WHERE: The River Weaver near Weaver Parkway, Winsford. Specific parking and meeting arrangements will be communicated to all who register
WHAT WE WILL BE DOING? There will be a role for anyone who wishes to help. There will be opportunities to:-
- Work from the water in or on a canoe/kayak/paddleboard
- Work from the side of bank (as this is deep water – no wading permitted)
- Non-physical supporting roles - do whatever you feel comfortable with!
For information: Floating Pennywort is an Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS) from South America and is threatening the habitat and native species of the River Weaver. It creates a heavy matting of vegetation on the river surface, reducing sunlight and oxygen to the water below and making paddle sports very difficult.
After the success of other volunteer action days, the Angling Trust and British Canoeing are continuing the battle against Floating Pennywort on the River Weaver with this event and further events during 2023. Please come along to support this activity.
